Black Sun is set to shine
BE seduced and confronted by the different ways people can be attracted to one another at the Fremantle Arts Centre’s newest exhibition.
The first WA solo exhibition for Spanish-born artist Dani Marti, Black Sun sees the anisi r«nect on his relationships with family. lovers and strangers alike by creating portraits that do not rely solely on physical appearance.
Combining video and textiles. his work is considered unconventional but extremely popular among visitors to his more than M solo exhibitions around the world. Marti said this exhibition was “a journey”.
“Black Sun is an exhibition playing with notions of portraiture, intimacy and abstraction: the emotional surface. light and darkness.” he said.
“The work comes into its own self, alive and ready to do what it’s meant to: interact and talk to the audience. It is a very sensual and seductive exhibition, but at the same time challenging.
“The light. the vistas on the garden and the exterior of the building transforms gradually as you walk along the gallery spaces, to a visceral, dark space.”
He said he enjoyed the headspace art pushed him into.
“It is always an exciting and obsessive process where you get to experience a whole spectrum of emotions, and you learn to live with all of them for what they are,” he said.
“It’s better than sex, and many personal relationships. Art is a good companion that takes me to some very funny places sometimes.”
The exhibition forms part of the Perth International Arts Festival.
Black Sun is at the Fremantle Arts Centre until March 28.
