Il 7 ottobre apre nel centro di Brescia la galleria CITRIC. Il nuovo spazio inaugura con la personale dell’artista spagnolo Dani Marti, che espone per la prima volta in Italia, e che presenterà una serie di lavori inediti ispirati alla vita di Beatrice Cenci. La storia e’ fra le tante di violenza e orrore che costellano il tardo Rinascimento europeo e che ha colpito molto la fantasia degli scrittori romantici, da Stendhal a Shelley a Melville. Marti coinvolge e appassiona con il suo stile inusuale fatto di intrecci di corda, fibra e altri materiali che sono l’elemento chiave dei suoi lavori tridimensionali.
Le Woven Constructions (costruzioni intrecciate) sono creazioni dinamiche molto complesse, costituite da materiali di uso comune e industriale, come polipropilene, poliestere, gomma e corde colorate montate su strutture di legno. Nonostante siano completamente fatte a mano, queste strutture hanno una forma minimale e piuttosto geometrica.
Dietro ogni opera c’è l’essenza di una persona e una storia. Dani Marti infatti realizza una sorta di ritratto delle persone che lo ispirano (persone che conosce, personaggi storici o attuali, cartoni animati o di pura fantasia), impiegando diversi materiali, non certo tradizionali. Ad ogni opera viene dato un nome prima ancora di essere realizzata, per permettere all’artista di stabilire una relazione molto intima con il lavoro, con il soggetto e con il processo di costruzione. Marti considera questo come un atto, un rituale di legame che gli permette di possedere la persona che ritrae.
Il suo lavoro è stimolato dalla sfida che il ritratto pone. Il suo interesse è nell’essenza dei soggetti, in ciò che è più nascosto, più intimo. L’essenza da cogliere e il tentare di riproporla. Questa operazione è maggiormente percepibile nelle tessiture in grande formato e nei video che prendono spunto dal linguaggio del documentario, per generare letture alternative nello spettatore. Il lavoro richiama l’intimità dei tessuti in contatto con il corpo e rappresenta non solo la figura, ma soprattutto la personalità, la sessualità, l’interiorità della persona ritratta. Come se con un microscopio l’artista avesse messo a fuoco un unico punto della persona ingrandendolo all’infinito, dando vita da questo solo punto un oggetto contemplativo e attraente.
Per Marti, la creazione/costruzione di queste opere è una lotta tra corpi – il suo e quello delle corde – : tende le corde, le fissa con forza, ma allo stesso tempo le accarezza, dà loro vita, come se fossero dei corpi sensuali. Le forme pulsano di energia tra le corde tese, i colori lottano nel loro contrasto cromatico, la forza fluttua tra le trame, ingoia la struttura ed esce dai suoi confini. Queste strutture – che non sono pittura, non sono scultura, non hanno dimensione, non possono essere contenute – invadono lo spazio e vanno ad interagire con altri corpi che stanno attorno.
In occasione della mostra viene presentato il catalogo Dani Marti Dark Bones con testo critico di Domenico Quaranta.

Citric gallery will be inaugurating in Brescia on the 7th October with a solo show of the Spanish artist Dani Marti, now based in Glasgow, who will be exhibiting his work for the first time in Italy. The new works to be shown are inspired by the life story of Beatrice Cenci, a late Renaissance figure whose drama has captured the attention and fantasy of authors such as Stendhal, Shelley and Melville. Marti’s work intrigues and involves with his unusual style made of intertwined ropes, fibres and other materials which are the key elements of his tri-dimensional works.
The Woven Constructions are complex and dynamic creations made of different materials of every day use or industrial, such as nylon, polyester, rubber and coloured ropes mounted on a wooden structure. Though made entirely by hand, these structures have a minimal and a very formal presence.
Behind each work there is the essence of a person and a story. Dani Marti creates a portrait of people who inspire him (people he knows, historic or popular characters, cartoons or made up), by using different materials, definitely not traditional materials. Each work is given a name even before being created. This allows the artist to establish a very intimate relation with his work, the subject and the construction process. Marti considers this as a bonding ritual that allows him to possess the person he is representing.
His work is very much stimulated by the challenge of portraiture. His main interest in the essence of each subject, in its most hidden and intimate aspects – the challenge of capturing it and reproducing it. This is mostly perceived by the type of weave he chooses to use, the textures, colours and materials associated to the character. He also captures this in his videos based on the documentary style and language, and used to generate a different point of view and key to interpretation for the viewer. His work recalls the intimacy of clothing on a body, and they represent not only the figure but above all the personality, sexuality, intimacy of a person. Just as with a microscope the artist intends to focus on a point of the person and enlarge on it, giving life from this detail to a contemplative and attractive object which is his work. – WOULD CANCEL THAT… NO THAT IMPORTANT
For Marti, the creation/construction of these works represents the struggle among bodies – his own and that of the ropes – he stretches the ropes, he fixes them with strength, but at the same time he caresses them, he gives them life, just like they were sensual bodies. The forms pulse with energy through the tense ropes, the colours contrast each other in a chromatic fight, strength flows among the weaving, engulfing the structure and flowing out of its confines. These structures, which are not painting nor sculptures, have no dimension that can be contained, they invade space and integrate and interact with the other bodies that surround them.
Accompanying the exhibition will be the catalogue “Dani Marti Dark Bones” with critical text by Domenico Quaranta.
