ART OF THE ORDINARY

DANI MARTI |VANILA NETTO | ROBBIE ROWLANDS JASON WING | LYDIA WEGNER | JULIA GORMAN

1-26 FEBRUARY

We exist in a culture asphyxiated by despensible objects. Seductive advertising campaigns manipulate our needs as we are persuaded to purchase even more possessions, securing our belief in a better, easier life. This accelerating accumulation of superfluous products means that our houses are now brimming with all the ingredients of the local landfill. Even so, manufacturers and retailers still convince us to renew and replace the things we own based on some arbitrary expiration date, dictated least of all by the continuing efficacy of our current belongings.

Disrupting this arc of consumption, six international and local artists transform the status of these objects from their quotidian tasks. Expanding the meaning and limiting the function of discarded objects, these artists provoke a new way of viewing our contemporary environment. Extending the dialogue started by Marcel Duchamp, mundane goods are sliced, stacked, balanced, and melted into extraordinary pieces.

Art of the Ordinary is the first exhibition for Arc One Gallery in 2011. Featuring new work by Dani Marti, Robbie Rowlands, Julia Gorman, Vanila Netto and Jason Wing, the exhibition brings together a range of disciplines including photography, sculpture, painting and wall drawings. Arc One Gallery is pleased to present for the first time the work of Lydia Wegner.
