1 January 2005. I was visiting my mother in Barcelona. She had not been feeling well and had been told of a possible heart surgery needed to be done . I could see fear in her eyes. After spending most of the day in bed, late in the afternoon, she decided to listen to concerto number 2 by Rachmaninov. Music is never tragic, music is joy. But there are times it necessarily gives us a taste for death. It has a thirst for destruction, every kind of destruction, extinction, breakage, dislocation.
