Nevertheless, contemporary art is riddled with therapeutic subtexts and strategies. Let the Healing Begin features works that address therapy. Some of the works endorse therapeutic imperatives, some satirise them, others are undecided. The line-up is a mix of local and international artists.

When artists site their practice within the fabric of social relations, documentary modes often play a central role in mediating events and experiences. Though the resulting material often bears a close resemblance to ethnographic mapping, investigative journalism or even community work, in contrast to the strict ethical codes to which these disciplines adhere many of today’s artists operate in somewhat murkier waters. Working outside – or even deliberately corrupting – accepted conventions and frameworks, the artists participating in this two-part exhibition find alternative means to engage with social realities in situations of war, sex and political urgency.

I met Tom, 65, a very eccentric character in a dating website. He lives with his wife in suburban Australia. I asked him if i could film him, agreed and suggested that I could stay over in his attic for one night. Tom sleeps with his wife, but they have not have sex for the last 20 years. He is bipolar, very creative and has a very positive outlook on life but tinted with some dark shadows. During the day, while Suzie was at work, we filmed. A portrait of someone reflecting on his life, fears and the magic behind his laughter.

portrait of david, a single man living alone in a tenement flat in the southside of glasgow. david does not talk much and spends most of his time alone. he spends his weekends at home, watching television or in front of the computer. the walls are painted beige. the video documents his movements in the space; it is through his relationship to the space, his mannerisms, and his tattoos, that we get a sense of self.

Filmed in 2005 during my brief visit to NYC. I got in touch with Joe through a dating website two hours before we met. On my way back to the airport, I stopped by his place. He had not slept for three days; I was welcomed to a place embedded with colour and sensuality. A brief an intimate portrait; intimacy to be consumed and disposed.

well and had been told of a possible heart surgery needed to be done . I could see fear in her eyes. After spending most of the day in bed, late in the afternoon, she decided to listen to concerto number 2 by Rachmaninov.

i first met robert in a charity shop, solidarity, in the west end of glasgow, in late 2005. he was standing next to the door dressed in a denim jacket and a pair of 501s with long straight hair and a bright patterned green cap . i introduced myself and i asked him if i could make a portrait of him, if i could video him. he responded that he didn’t like the idea, but mentioned he had a lot of interesting things to talk about. after some persuasion, we met that night at his place, a small one bedroom flat, painted, also, in bright green. i asked him only one question: “tell me about you, who you are”. i was there for 3 hours. we continued to have our ‘meetings’ for over a year. through his narrations, you get a good sense of the history of glasgow, and a strong sense of different robert’s coming through : the intimate, the entertainer, the liar. once the show was up at tramway, glasgow, an installation comprising 9 monitors and one projection, i invited him to come over to view it. he told me that he was not interested, but asked if i was coming to film him again.
